Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.  For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.  If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. 2 Corinthians 1:3-6(NIV)

Encouragement in the Midst of Suffering
Rare indeed is the life that is free from all trial and hardship. Even for the carefree person a lingering illness, persistent obstacle or family tragedy can result in a rude awakening to life's vagaries. To many of us such a state of affairs is an outrage. For Paul, however, suffering is an inevitable part of the Christian life and an opportunity to learn how God goes about meeting our every need. This is reflected in the central theme of verses 3-6: divine provision of encouragement in the midst of suffering.

Elsewhere, such a prominently featured religious symbol might be cause for controversy. But at Hopkins Hospital, "Christus Consolator" has managed to defy its traditional symbolism and garner respect from nearly all who pass. Long a source of solace and hope for patients and families, the Christ statue also has meaning for hundreds of employees. Pray for the Christians People of Nigeria Nigeria churches hit by blasts during Christmas prayers  Bomb blasts targeting Christmas Day church services in two Nigerian cities have left at least 28 people dead, with three more attacks on other towns. The Islamist group Boko Haram said it had attacked St Theresa's Church in Madalla, near the capital Abuja, killing 27 people.  A second explosion shortly after hit a church in the central city of Jos. A policeman died during gunfire.  Three attacks in northern Yobe state targeted a church and security forces. Two hit the town of Damaturu, and a third struck Gadaka.
